About Us
Mary and Martha House, Inc
Mary and Martha House is a non-profit 501 (c) (3) located in Ruskin, Florida that has cared for battered and homeless women and their dependent children since 1982. In keeping with the vision of it founders, emergency shelter is provided in a environment of dignity, compassion and respect and it is the only residential shelter in south and east Hillsborough County (rural) that serves both homeless and abused women. Its target population is not the chronic homeless, mentally ill or women who are in need of extensive drug treatment but the ever growing segment of female headed households and single women who are recently homeless or in danger of becoming homeless. It was founded by 3 women who volunteered in the community and recognized a growing need to help female farm workers who were victims of domestic violence.
Mary and Martha House believes homeless and abused women need a safe environment that provides extensive support service and order for them to develop personal and economic resources. The organization offers a two tier program that provides 1) short term emergency shelter designed to help women and children in immediate need of temporary shelter and 2) longer term transitional housing and support to help them gain the resources necessary to obtain permanent housing. Mary and Martha House relies heavily on volunteers and donations to support of the shelter programs.
We are the only emergency shelter in this area and we have an over abundance of women and children in need of housing. Since the inception, 25 years ago, The Mary and Martha House, Inc. has provided services for 4000 women & their children.
